Draw the Internet
Draw where a cartoon actually comes from before anybody explains it. Most children draw a phone, usefully.
- Ages
- 4 to 10
- Time
- 15 minutes, across two sittings
- You Need
- Paper, crayons, and the discipline not to correct the first drawing.
What to do
- Before any explanation: ask them to draw where a cartoon is before they press play. Say nothing else. Do not hint.
- Keep that drawing. Write the date on the back.
- Read the internet explanation out loud.
- Ask them to draw it again on a fresh sheet, then put the two side by side.
Ask afterward
- What changed between your two drawings?
- Where does the cartoon live when nobody is watching it?
- What happens if one of the roads is broken?
- Who owns all the roads?
For the grown-up
Almost every child draws a device the first time, which is exactly what you want. The gap between the two sheets is the lesson, and it is far more convincing to the child than being told they were wrong.

What Is the Internet?
The activity works on its own, and it works considerably better after the explanation it belongs with.
