The Books

Where an idea goes after it proves itself.

Two sites, two jobs. This one explains why an idea is worth introducing early. The other one packages the ones that earn it.

Two sites, on purpose

Digital Crayon Wisdom is the worldview and the library. Digital Crayon Books is the coloring books, activity books and project books. Keeping them separate is a deliberate decision, not an accident of domain shopping.

A site that is trying to teach you something and sell you something in the same paragraph does neither well. You can feel it in the writing. Every explanation starts bending toward the thing in the sidebar.

So the explanation lives here, free, complete, and under no obligation to lead anywhere. If a subject turns out to be worth forty pages instead of two, that is when it becomes a book, and the book lives next door.

Which site does what

If you are trying to work out where to look for something, this is the division.

How an idea becomes a book

Nothing gets published as a book because it sounded good in a meeting. The library is the filter.

  1. A question shows up

Usually from a child, sometimes from a parent trying to answer one and running out of sentence.

  2. We write the explanation

It goes in the library, free. If it cannot survive the crayon test it does not get published at all.

  3. People react, or they do not

What gets read, time on the page, which activities get printed, which questions keep coming back. Honest signal, not a survey.

  4. It grows an activity and a story

If a subject can carry three formats without repeating itself, it has more in it than one explanation.

  5. It becomes a book concept

Only the subjects that got this far. The ones that stall stay in the library, which is a perfectly good outcome.

Selling without selling

We may as well say the commercial part plainly rather than pretend the free library is charity.

The library has real value on its own and it also tells us what to make. That is a better product development process than guessing, and it means the useful thing comes first in the order rather than being bolted on after the product exists. Teach something worth knowing; the products are the natural extension of that, not the reason for it.

If you never buy a book and just read the library for years, that is a completely acceptable outcome and the site will not nag you about it.

Go have a look

The bookshelf is arranged by age band, from crayon years through founder years.
